A simple seven-step plan for setting up your very first AI agent workflow, from picking the right task to deciding when it's safe to let it run.
So you're ready to put an AI agent to work. Where do you start? Here's the thing: your first workflow should be small, boring, and safe. That's how you learn, without risking anything that matters.
Here's a simple plan, step by step.
First, pick one task. Choose something you do every week, the same way every time, that takes 30 minutes or more. Meeting notes, a weekly report, or follow-up drafts are great first picks. Our Workflows section has playbooks for each.
Next, write down how you do it today. List every step in plain words, like you're training a new hire. If you can't write it down, the agent can't follow it either.
Then, pick a tool. Start with one you already have, or one that fits the apps you use. Our AI Agent Directory shows what each tool says it can do and what it costs.
After that, connect only what the task needs. One or two apps. Read-only where you can. You can always add more later.
Now, add an approval step. Anything that sends, spends, posts, or deletes should wait for your OK. Every tool we cover describes some way to do this, from Zapier's per-tool approvals to Make's manual approvals to Lindy's approval before sending.
Next, run it side by side. For the first two weeks, do the task yourself and let the agent do it too. Compare the results. Fix the instructions where it goes wrong.
And last, loosen up slowly. Once it's been right several times in a row, you can spot-check instead of checking everything. Keep the approval step on anything that can't be undone.
A few signs you picked a good first task:
- You can describe "done" in one sentence.
- A mistake would be easy to catch and easy to fix.
- It only touches one or two apps.
- You'll notice right away if it stops working.
Of course, your mileage may vary. But start small, keep the yes in your hands, and build from there. Once your first one works, the second one is a lot easier.
