October 2026 Roundup: The Month AI Agents Came to Small Business

Oct 28, 2026

A one-page guide to October 2026's biggest AI announcements for small businesses, from Google, Intuit, Gusto, Xero, Shopify, Wix, and Canva, with links to our full stories.

So much happened in October 2026 that it's hard to keep up. Here's a one-page guide to the AI announcements most useful to small businesses, each from the company's own announcement, as we read them on Oct 28, 2026. Each item links to our full story.

The big theme: AI agents that work inside the tools you already use, with you approving what matters.

Money and books:

  • Xero (Oct 14): a connected app for Google Gemini that brings live Xero data into Gemini chats, for questions about profit, overdue invoices, and bills. See our Xero and Gemini story.
  • Intuit (Oct 27): new AI tools in QuickBooks that surface aging invoices and follow up with customers automatically. Intuit says this helps businesses get paid 4 days faster on average. See our Intuit Connect story.
  • Wix (Oct 15): Symphony by Wix agents can now pay bills and reorder stock through Stripe's Link wallet, with the owner approving each purchase. See our Wix Symphony story.

Payroll and people: - Gusto (Fall Showcase): connect Gusto to Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI tools to prep payroll and ask about your team, with every change approved by you. See our Gusto Fall Showcase story.

Selling online:

  • Shopify (Oct 1): Canvas, a new design surface where you build your store with Sidekick. See our Canvas story.
  • Shopify (Oct 28): the Fall '26 Edition, with connectors for nine AI agents, shop.md, Shop Pay inside personal agents, and a knowledge base for the facts agents share about your store. See our Fall '26 Edition story.

Marketing and design:

  • Google (Oct 20): a small business hub in the Gemini app, with marketing and finance skills and connections to apps like Canva, Shopify, Wix, and Xero. See our Gemini small business tools story.
  • Canva (Oct 22): Canva Craft, Canva's first image model, built for design and available to all Canva users in Dream Lab. See our Canva Craft story.

What ties it together: almost every announcement says the same thing in different words: the agent prepares, and you decide. That's a good rule for any tool.

Three things to do this month: 1. Pick one connector: connect the tool where work piles up most, and start with questions. Our lesson on AI connectors explains how. 2. Set payment rules: before any agent can spend, decide your limits. Our lesson on letting AI agents pay can help. 3. Get your facts straight: make your hours, prices, and policies match everywhere. Our business facts playbook shows how.

A small-business example: a three-person home goods shop on Shopify spends one afternoon on this list. The owner updates the store's knowledge base, connects Shopify to the AI assistant she already uses, and sets a rule that no agent pays a new supplier without her approval. (Our illustration.)

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Which of these tools do I already pay for?
  • Where does work pile up every week?
  • What should never happen without my approval?

How we put this together: every item comes from the company's own announcement. Follow the links to our full stories for the details and sources.
