Support Desk Setup Service

Note: Any money examples here are hypothetical. We're not promising anyone will earn anything.

An idea for a service: add an AI support agent to a small business help desk, with clear rules for what goes to a person.

The idea

Help small businesses add an AI support agent to the help desk they already have, so common questions get answered fast and tricky ones go to a person with the full story.

Who it's for

Online stores, service businesses, and small software companies that answer the same customer questions every day and can't hire more support staff.

The problem you solve

The same questions keep coming in, like order status, refunds, and how-to's. Replies are slow, the owner ends up answering them at night, and customers wait.

How you help

A set-up-and-tune service. You set up a support agent with a tool like Botpress, which says its agents can take actions like refunds and account updates and hand tickets to a person with the full history. You write the rules for what the AI handles and what goes to a human, and you review the results with the owner every month.

How it works, step by step

Here's how it could work, step by step (it's an outline, not a case study):

  1. Look at the last month of support questions with the owner and group them.
  2. Pick the two or three most common, lowest-risk questions for the AI to handle first.
  3. Write the handoff rules: what the AI answers, what it passes to a person, and what it should never do.
  4. Set up the agent on the owner's helpdesk or webchat, with approval on anything that moves money, like refunds.
  5. Test it with real past questions before customers ever see it.
  6. Go live, then review the conversations together every month and add the next question type.

Ways to get paid

Common ways to charge (just examples, not our earnings): a one-time setup fee, then a monthly fee for reviews and tuning. We're not quoting dollar amounts as market rates. Any numbers you use are hypothetical until you test them in your own market. Make sure the client knows the tool has its own costs, too. For example, Botpress prices by conversation.

What you need to get started

You'll want a good feel for customer service, comfort setting up at least one support agent tool, and a simple agreement that spells out who approves refunds and what the AI is allowed to do.

Keeping it running

Check conversations regularly, keep the handoff rules up to date, watch the client's usage so there are no surprise bills, and keep an eye on each tool's pricing and features, since these change.

Things to watch out for

Watch out for clients who want the AI to handle everything on day one, answers that sound confident but are wrong, and refund rules that aren't clear. Start small, keep a person in the loop on money, and grow from there.
