SOP and Training Kit Service

Note: Any money examples here are hypothetical. We're not promising anyone will earn anything.

An idea for a service: turn an owner's know-how into how-to guides, checklists, and staff quizzes, drafted with AI and checked with the owner.

The idea

Help small businesses turn the know-how in the owner's head into a simple training kit: written how-to guides, checklists, and short staff quizzes, drafted with AI from recordings and interviews, then checked by you and the owner.

Who it's for

Growing local businesses that are hiring, like cafés, salons, cleaning companies, clinics, and trades, where the owner still trains everyone personally.

The problem you solve

Every new hire learns by shadowing the owner. Nothing is written down, so training takes forever and quality varies from person to person.

How you help

A fixed-scope project. You record the owner doing key tasks or interview them, then use AI tools to draft guides and quizzes. For example, xAI says a Grok Bot can follow along as you complete a workflow once and save it as a routine, Notion says its AI can generate docs from your pages, and Microsoft says Copilot in Word can check for missing info or inconsistencies. You review every step with the owner, then deliver a tidy training kit they own.

How it works, step by step

Here's how it could work, step by step (it's an outline, not a case study):

  1. List the ten tasks every new hire must learn.
  2. Record or interview the owner on each one.
  3. Use AI to draft a how-to guide and checklist per task.
  4. Review each guide with the owner, and test it with a staff member.
  5. Add a short quiz for each guide.
  6. Deliver the kit in a shared folder, and show the owner how to update it.

Ways to get paid

Common ways to charge (just examples, not our earnings): a project fee priced by the number of guides, plus optional quarterly updates. We're not quoting dollar amounts as market rates. Any numbers you use are hypothetical until you test them in your own market.

What you need to get started

You'll want clear writing, patience interviewing busy owners, comfort with at least one AI tool, and a simple template for guides.

Keeping it running

Have the owner approve every guide. Keep business details private. For safety, health, or regulated tasks, make sure guides match required rules and point to official training where needed.

Things to watch out for

Watch out for owners who can't find time to be recorded, tasks that differ from person to person, and guides that go out of date. Schedule short sessions and set an update reminder.
