The plain-English overview

Want to build an AI helper and actually see each step it takes? Dify is a platform for building AI apps, agents, and workflows, with the steps laid out visually. Here's what Dify's official site says, as of Oct 28, 2026.

Here's what you can build with it, in Dify's words:

  • Workflows: visual building blocks plus AI prompts that define how an app thinks, pulls in data, makes decisions, uses tools, asks for human input, and finishes the task. The logic stays visible, so it's easier to test and fix.
  • Agents: build one by chatting or set it up by hand. Use it as an app, embed it on a website, or reuse it inside a workflow.
  • Knowledge pipelines: bring in files, websites, online documents, and drives, then clean, organize, and test them before an agent uses them.
  • Plugins: add model providers, tools, data sources, and MCP integrations (MCP is a standard way to plug AI into your other apps) from Dify's Marketplace.

When it's ready, you can publish what you built as a hosted app, an API, a website embed, or an MCP-compatible tool. Dify also gives you logs, feedback, and usage data to see what happened.

Three ways to run it: First, Dify Cloud. Dify hosts it, so there's no setup on your side. Next, Dify Enterprise. Self-host or run it in your private cloud, with SSO, role-based access, and audit logs. Dify lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. And last, the Community Edition. It's source-available (under a license based on Apache-2.0) and you self-host it with Docker.

Pricing for Dify Cloud, as listed (taxes extra):

  • Sandbox: free, with 200 message credits, 1 team member, and 5 apps.
  • Professional: $590 per workspace per year, with 5,000 message credits a month, 3 team members, and 50 apps.
  • Team: $1,590 per workspace per year, with 10,000 message credits a month, 50 team members, and 200 apps.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing.

Message credits let you try models from providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, and xAI. Once they're used up, you can switch to your own API key. Dify's page describes the Community Edition as free, for open-source fans, individual developers, and non-commercial projects. Monthly prices weren't listed on the page we read, so those are unknown for now.

A quick note: the customer quotes on Dify's site are its own marketing, so we've left them out.
